Contemporary New York actress C.J. Welles, who aspires to take the role of Jane Austen in a play, gets the opportunity to meet the famous author herself when she inexplicably travels back in time to 1801 Bath, England. Although she faces some difficulty acclimating to the mores of that society, she fortunately finds shelter and patronage from Lady Dalrymple, who believes C.J. to be her niece, and romance with Jane Austen?s cousin, the Earl of Darlington.
